It is an historical fiction story set in Scotland and written in English with some Lowland Scot dialogue. Kidnapped is set around real 18th-century Scottish events, notably the &#8220;Appin murder&#8221;, which occurred in the aftermath of the Jacobite rising of 1745. Many of the characters are real people, including one of the principals, Alan Breck Stewart. The political situation of the time is portrayed from multiple viewpoints, and the Scottish Highlanders are treated sympathetically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" class=\"pt-Normal-000009\"><span class=\"pt-DefaultParagraphFont-000004\">Tricked by his uncle who has stolen his inheritance, young David Balfour is kidnapped and bound for America. Or at least that was the plan, until the ship runs into trouble and David is rescued by Alan Breck Stewart, a fugitive Jacobite.  Balfour, a canny lowlander, finds an echo of some wilder and more romantic self in the willful and courageous Highland spirit of Alan Breck.  A strange and difficult friendship is born as their adventures begin.
