This little book is designed to prepare the student to begin reading the actual texts of Sacred Scripture, by asking and then providing answers to some fundamental questions: Where did Scripture come from, anyway? Who chose what books are included and not included? How did Protestantism affect things? Are all versions (translations) of the bible equally good? What are the different levels of meanings in Scripture? After reading this book, the student should be sufficiently prepared to embark on the reading of the selected books of Scripture, each of which is carefully annotated and illustrated by Christ the King Books, drawing heavily on the commentaries from the saints, Fathers, and Doctors of the Catholic Church but with the addition of modern study aids such as maps, pictures, vocabulary definitions, and many notes from our staff.
All the books of Sacred Scripture that Christ the King Books publishes include student-friendly annotations, images, and illustrations to aid in the understanding of difficult passages. The text of our annotated Scriptures is that of the Douay-Rheims English translation. This is in turn a faithful translation of St. Jerome’s Latin Vulgate Bible, which is the only translation guaranteed by the Church to be free from doctrinal and moral errors.
